Cape Town Child Welfare Welcomes You!

Message from Nelson Mandela

"Dear Friends

The wonder of the Internet and its promise of a world without borders, of a global citizenry empowered, enriched and interconnected, also brings with it the hope of a world that is more compassionate, more caring and more committed to eradicating poverty and suffering everywhere.

I make this appeal to the Worldwide Internet Community to support us in our efforts to rebuild and uplift the lives of the most vulnerable of the victims of South Africa's past - our children."

Gugulethu office launches CHILD PROTECTION MONTH

The Gugulethu site office took the lead and launched Child Protection Month by going straight to the heart of the matter - the children.

Intermediary and Senior phase learners from Siyazingisa Primary School took took the streets along with Cape Town Child Welfare staff to make a stand in reminding the community, lest they forget, of the importance of respecting children and their rights, and to protect them from harm and abuse.

So overwhelmed were AVUSA Media Division by the plight of underprivileged children across South Africa, that they launched a charity drive to collect toys, clothes, blankets and books from companies throughout South Africa.  Collection bins were placed on companies premises that enabled staff, clients, suppliers and guests to contribute to easing the plight of children.

Advertising, marketing, media and communications companies who got involded include Notabene, Ebony Ivory, Dmark, MediaMax, Universal McCann, Human Communications, Publicis, Mindshareworld, OMD and Whalleys & Associates.  The response was phenomenal, with contributions being made on a daily basis.

Cape Town Child Welfare was one of 3 organisations selected from across South Africa to benefit from this incredible donation.  Without the generosity of the agencies and AVUSA's involvement, this Christmas would have been a gift-less one for most of these children.

From our children to all companies and individuals that donated, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

Bikers do it for the children!!

It was a fantastic late spring day on Sunday 25 November '07 when thousands of Cape Town's bikers took to the the highways and byways, with their iron horses clad in toys for children.  The reason?  Cape Town's 25th CHARITY TOY RUN.  This Cape Town tradition, organised by the Italian Owners Motorcycle Club benefits needy children across the entire peninsula.

400 hundred children's toys were donated to Cape Town Child Welfare to benefit the most needy children within our system.

From the children, we say a huge and hearty THANK YOU!

Thursday the 8th of November 2007 saw the culmination of some of South Africa’s leading online media kingpins in a tournament of the poker tables. The event was conceptualised as a result of the loyal and avid participation and following of poker amongst South Africans coupled with the intention to raise funds for needy charities nationwide.

Cape Town Child Welfare is on her own

With our 100th birthday fast approaching, our board made a momentous decision - to disaffiliate from Child Welfare South Africa and face our future on our own two feet.

They felt that after one hundred years, our organisation deserved to be cut free from the proverbial apron strings and stand alone and proud.

We are now looking with enthusiasm towards the future and are keenly grasping our independence.

Salaries for social work professionals improved!

Cape Town Child Welfare is really delighted to announce that, due to an increased subsidy from the Department of Social Services, we have been able to increase the salaries and benefits for our social work professionals.  This increase has been very welcomed by our staff and has certainly brought our salary scales in line with those of other NGOs.

The International Forum for Child Welfare is an international non-governmental organisation dedicated to the promotion of the rights and well-being of children globally, which recognises the contribution of effective leadership in the challenge of making the world a better place for children.

Cape Town Child Welfare launches HELPKIDS HOTLINE

Cape Town Child Welfare launched its new helpkids Hotline on Friday 22 September.  The hotline will provide much-needed support to children in crisis in the Cape Peninsula and will reinforce the good work being done on the ground in protecting children by Cape Town Child Welfare’s Eye on the Child volunteers.

Since 1908, Cape Town Child Welfare, the oldest and second-largest child welfare organisation in South Africa, has had a reputation of setting trends.

Its Isolabantwana (Eye on the Child) programme paved the way for other child welfare organisations throughout South Africa to set up similar groundbreaking services using fully trained volunteers certified by the Commissioner of Child Welfare to do the work previously only authorised to be carried out by fully qualified social workers and members of the police.  Volunteers literally become the eyes (and the ears) in their communities and, under the auspices of Eye on the Child, are able to enter a home and remove a child if suspicions of abuse, neglect or abandonment are aroused.

And now Cape Town Child Welfare is strengthening its ten Eye on the Child programmes through the innovative use of technology.  From its offices in situated in the heart of Athlone, the organisation has set up its helpkids Hotline.

But this far from an ordinary helpline staffed during working hours.  For a start, the helpkids Hotline is available 24 hours to any child nationwide.  Outside the Peninsula, the caller will be referred to a network of service providers around the country, including 174 child welfare organisations, Childline, Safeline, SAPS, and government social service departments.   Within the Cape Peninsula the operator will have access to up to 45 Cape Town Child Welfare staff and volunteers via two-way radio links.

At any one time, Cape Town Child Welfare senior management, on-duty social workers and Eye on the Child volunteers from each of its six geographic ‘hot spot’ teams, and members of its security team will carry two-way radios.  Each car within the organisation’s fleet also carries a two-way radio.

This circle of support will, therefore, ensure that the person calling will receive the best level of appropriate service from Cape Town Child Welfare 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  It will also help members of Cape Town Child Welfare’s staff should they find themselves in difficulty while out on duty, which, unfortunately, has been the case in the past.

Niresh Ramklass, chief executive of Cape Town Child Welfare, says that the system goes beyond what most other child welfare organisations around the world offer.  “The service gives vital strength and support to our Eye on the Child volunteers who are our eyes and ears on the ground in the communities where we work and enables our social workers to truly offer round-the-clock support to children in crisis.  At the same time, it will ensure our staff can go about their work confident in the knowledge that they can call for help should they run into security problems.”

The helpkids Hotline number is 0800helpkids or 0800 435754.
