NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN CAPE TOWN CHILD WELFARE
NEW BUILDING FOR GUGULETU From Wendy Houses to a Beautiful New Building
Since 2004 clients in the Guguletu Area had to see their social workers in Wendy Houses due to a shortage of space at the existing building. Meetings had to be held either in one of the wendy houses or in the waiting room. This is all going to change shortly thanks to the wonderful sponsorship by The Förderverein Khayelitsha e.V. Haltern am See, a German organisation who has a longstanding relationship with the organisation.
Our heartfelt thank you to them!!!!!

Cape Town Child Welfare HELPKIDS HOTLINE
The hotline will provide much-needed support to children in crisis in the Cape Peninsula and will reinforce the good work being done on the ground in protecting children by Cape Town Child Welfare’s Eye on the Child volunteers.
Since 1908, Cape Town Child Welfare, the oldest and second-largest child welfare organisation in South Africa, has had a reputation of setting trends.
Its Isolabantwana (Eye on the Child) programme paved the way for other child welfare organisations throughout South Africa to set up similar groundbreaking services using fully trained volunteers certified by the Commissioner of Child Welfare to do the work previously only authorised to be carried out by fully qualified social workers and members of the police. Volunteers literally become the eyes (and the ears) in their communities and, under the auspices of Eye on the Child, are able to enter a home and remove a child if suspicions of abuse, neglect or abandonment are aroused.
And now Cape Town Child Welfare is strengthening its ten Eye on the Child programmes through the innovative use of technology. From its offices in situated in the heart of Athlone, the organisation has set up its helpkids Hotline.
But this far from an ordinary helpline staffed during working hours. For a start, the helpkids Hotline is available 24 hours to any child nationwide. Outside the Peninsula, the caller will be referred to a network of service providers around the country, including 174 child welfare organisations, Childline, Safeline, SAPS, and government social service departments. Within the Cape Peninsula the operator will have access to up to 45 Cape Town Child Welfare staff and volunteers via two-way radio links.
At any one time, Cape Town Child Welfare senior management, on-duty social workers and Eye on the Child volunteers from each of its six geographic ‘hot spot’ teams, and members of its security team will carry two-way radios. Each car within the organisation’s fleet also carries a two-way radio.
This circle of support will, therefore, ensure that the person calling will receive the best level of appropriate service from Cape Town Child Welfare 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It will also help members of Cape Town Child Welfare’s staff should they find themselves in difficulty while out on duty, which, unfortunately, has been the case in the past.
Niresh Ramklass, chief executive of Cape Town Child Welfare, says that the system goes beyond what most other child welfare organisations around the world offer. “The service gives vital strength and support to our Eye on the Child volunteers who are our eyes and ears on the ground in the communities where we work and enables our social workers to truly offer round-the-clock support to children in crisis. At the same time, it will ensure our staff can go about their work confident in the knowledge that they can call for help should they run into security problems.”
The helpkids Hotline number is 0800helpkids or 0800 435754 0800 435754 .
The work of Cape Town Child Welfare has been generously supported by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, with our latest award totalling R1.5 million!!
