General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches 1978 to 1985
Bishop of Johannesburg 1985 to 1986
Archbishop of Cape Town 1986 to 1996
Chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission 1996 to 2001
Was awarded more than 90 honorary doctorates between 1978 and 2000
His Curriculum Vitae lists 75 major international awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984
